This work is based on observations of Berlin’s streets and urban environment. In Berlin, people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds and with diverse social circumstances coexist, and their activities continually transform the cityscape. By reading the forms of urban residues and traces that appear throughout the city—walls, torn posters, graffiti, bulky waste left on the street, and broken windows—I develop the images that form the basis of the work.
The work focuses on language and its alternative possibilities. I extract symbolic images from objects and traces that have been abandoned within the city. These images are not fixed to any specific meaning or content but remain detached from established systems of language. Through the repeated act of walking through the city and encountering things by chance, these images accumulate continuously and gradually form a system of their own.
When these images are further transformed into murals, sculptures, video works, and other forms, creating a physical environment within the exhibition space, a different form of language—or a realm of communication that precedes language—emerges as a tangible space: the Post Language Realm.
